Sound Credit Introduces AI Credits: Industry-Standard AI Disclosure, Built Into How Music Is Already Credited

AI Credits lets you disclose how AI tools contributed to a track, right where you credit humans.

MEMPHIS, TN. Sound Credit today announced AI Credits, a new capability that lets music makers document exactly where and how AI tools contributed to a recording, in the same place they already credit producers, engineers, and session players. An AI contribution is entered like any other credit: attached to a real role such as vocals, guitar, or mixing, tagged to the specific tool that performed it, and visually distinguished from human credits throughout the project.

The timing is not accidental. Two forces have converged to make structured AI disclosure the new baseline for recorded music: the European Union's AI Act transparency obligations, which begin applying on August 2, 2026, and the music industry's own disclosure standard, developed through DDEX and now publicly backed by Spotify, which began displaying AI disclosures in its Song Credits this spring.

The industry moved first: DDEX and Spotify

In September 2025, Spotify announced it was helping develop and would support a new industry standard for AI disclosures in music credits, developed through DDEX, and committed to displaying that information across its app as labels, distributors, and music partners submit it. Spotify was explicit about the thinking behind it:

We know the use of AI tools is increasingly a spectrum, not a binary, where artists and producers may choose to use AI to help with some parts of their productions and not others. The industry needs a nuanced approach to AI transparency, not to be forced to classify every song as either 'is AI' or 'not AI.'

Spotify also made clear this is not a penalty system. In its words, it is not about punishing artists who use AI responsibly or down-ranking tracks for disclosing information about how they were made. The company announced the standard alongside a broad coalition of distribution partners, including Amuse, Believe, CD Baby, DistroKid, EMPIRE, FUGA, IDOL, RouteNote, and others.

In April 2026, Spotify confirmed the feature had gone live, launching a beta that lets artists share how they used AI in their music. Where an artist chooses to disclose through their label or distributor, listeners see credits for specific contributions like vocals, lyrics, or production in Song Credits.

The plumbing underneath that feature is DDEX, the standards body for music metadata exchange. Version 4.3.2 of its Electronic Release Notification (ERN) standard added, in DDEX's own words, communication of the fact that a recording was made, fully or in part, by a generative AI tool, and the same for an individual contribution. In practice, the standard defines two key markers:

  • ContainsAI: a flag on each recording, release, image, video, or text resource, with allowed values of All, Partly, or None. If the value is All, only generative AI contributors are listed. If None, no contributor may carry a Partly or All AI contribution.
  • SpecialContributor set to GenerativeAI, with an AiContribution element: the contributor-level markers that identify a specific AI tool as a credited contributor, each with its own All, Partly, or None value.

In other words, the industry standard treats an AI tool as a contributor with a role, not a checkbox. That is exactly the model Sound Credit's AI Credits implements.

The law is arriving: the EU AI Act

The European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, published in the Official Journal of the European Union on July 12, 2024) is the world's first comprehensive AI law, and its transparency chapter directly touches AI-generated audio.

Article 50 of the Act sets out the transparency obligations. Two parts are especially relevant to music:

  • Article 50(2), machine-readable marking: providers of AI systems that generate synthetic audio, image, video, or text must ensure the outputs are marked in a machine-readable format and detectable as artificially generated or manipulated.
  • Article 50(4), disclosure of generated or manipulated content: deployers of AI systems that generate or manipulate deep-fake content must disclose that the content has been artificially generated or manipulated. For music, the Act includes an artistic carve-out: where the content forms part of an evidently artistic, creative, satirical, fictional, or analogous work, the obligation is limited to disclosing this in a way that does not hamper the display or enjoyment of the work.

On the dates: the Article 50 transparency obligations apply from August 2, 2026. During 2026 the EU also moved to streamline how those rules are implemented through its Digital Omnibus on AI, with the Council giving the regulation final approval on June 29, 2026. To help everyone prepare, the European Commission published draft guidelines on the Article 50 obligations, stating plainly that from August 2, 2026, people in the European Union will have to be informed when they are interacting with AI systems or exposed to certain AI-generated or manipulated content.

It does not matter where you are based. The Act has extraterritorial reach. What counts is not where a recording is made, but where it is heard. If your music is accessible to an audience in the EU, whether through a global streaming service, a public upload, or an open link, the transparency obligations are in scope regardless of whether you are in Nashville, London, or anywhere else. For a catalog that lives on worldwide DSPs, that effectively means everyone.

How the AI Act applies to a song

The most important passage in Article 50 for anyone releasing music is that artistic carve-out. The Act does not demand that a song carry a visible banner, a spoken disclaimer, or an audible watermark. Where AI-generated or AI-manipulated content forms part of an evidently artistic, creative, satirical, fictional, or analogous work, the disclosure obligation is limited to an appropriate manner that does not hamper the display or enjoyment of the work.

That phrasing effectively describes credits. A song's credits already travel with the track, already surface on streaming platforms, and already exist to tell listeners who and what made the recording. Disclosure that lives in the credits satisfies the spirit of the regulation without touching the listening experience itself. It is hard to imagine a mechanism better matched to an appropriate manner that does not hamper the display or enjoyment of the work than the credits infrastructure the industry has used for decades.

Not every use of AI is in scope, and that distinction matters. The obligation targets generative and deepfake content: audio that resembles a real person or performance and could be taken as authentic, such as a voice clone singing something the artist never actually sang. Routine studio processing is a different thing. Cleanup, noise reduction, de-essing, pitch correction, stem separation, and comping refine a performance the artist genuinely gave; they do not manufacture one. This is precisely why AI Credits names the specific tool behind a contribution rather than flagging that 'AI touched the file' at all. The disclosure attaches where a tool actually generated part of the record, not to the everyday plug-ins engineers have always used.

There is an important legal nuance. Article 50's obligations formally bind the providers and deployers of AI systems, meaning the companies that build generative tools and the parties that use them to produce content, rather than musicians as a class. A producer who generates a vocal with an AI tool and releases it may sit within that deployer role. A songwriter who used no AI does not. But the practical consequence for the music supply chain does not depend on where any one person falls. AI-generated audio will increasingly arrive pre-marked under Article 50(2), platforms will increasingly surface AI provenance, and the recordings without credible provenance data will be the ones that stand out. Disclosure is becoming infrastructure.

The convergence is the point. The EU has defined what disclosure must accomplish, and the music industry, through DDEX and the platforms adopting its standard, has built the vocabulary for how to express it. A recording whose AI contributions are documented in structured credits is ready for both.

What Sound Credit's AI Credits does

  • The tool gets named. A curated catalog of AI tools, spanning full-song generation, voice and vocal generation, and text and lyric assistance, lets users pick the specific tool, or type in one that isn't listed. The tool name is stored as the credited entity for that contribution.
  • All, Partly, or None, derived automatically. Sound Credit derives a recording-level AI-content status from the participant list using the same three values as DDEX's ContainsAI flag: all AI contributors means All, a mix of human and AI means Partly, and no AI contributors means None.
  • Visible, not buried. AI credits render in their own visual style throughout the credits overview, so a glance at a project distinguishes human performances from AI contributions.
  • Excluded where they don't belong. AI tools do not hold royalty claims or union standing, so Sound Credit automatically excludes all-AI contributors from the Splits workflow and from union form exports such as AFM and SAG-AFTRA. Disclosure never contaminates the paperwork that governs human compensation.

Why this matters now

Credits have always been the music industry's memory. As AI enters the creative process, that memory has to expand to cover it accurately, granularly, and without stigma. Spotify's framing is the right one: AI use is a spectrum, and the answer is nuanced disclosure, not a scarlet letter. The EU has made transparency a legal floor. DDEX has given the industry a shared vocabulary.
